I was at PetSmart today and there were two male bettas in one cup attacking each other, locked as they bit each others faces. I immediately told an employee, and she had to separate them by hand. It was quite, quite awful. She said they sometimes jump out the feeding hole from one cup to another. Ugh.

We used to breed bettas. Male bettas are so aggressive. If their water is high, an they feel threatened, they will jump out. They are easily provoked once mature. But, that is their beauty, when they are coloured up, flared out, angry. Nature is interesting.

This is why I got a male and female betta. Even though they're separated by a divider, I figured the male would be far less stressed out by the proximity of the female and less likely to want to attack than he would if there were another male present.
